Gus Frerotte Appears on High School Football America

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Gus Frerotte's first year as head coach of the John Burroughs School ended just short of a gold medal, and he joined me on Thursday night's High School Football America radio show to talk about last weekend's Class 3 championship game loss to Logan-Rogersville.

JBS was knocking-on-the-door late in the game down 21-14 on Saturday when junior running back Ezekiel Elliott fumbled.  Logan-Rogersville recovered the ball near the goal-line to preserve the school's first state title.

Frerotte talks about the disappointment of the school's second straight runner-up finish.  In 2010, John Burroughs lost 21-20 to Richmond, after losing a 20-7 fourth quarter lead.

With only eight seniors on this year's squad, Frerotte also talks about the excitement of 2012.

Frerotte is one of three former NFL players on the show.

Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Don Beebe talks about his team, Aurora Christian, winning the Class 3A Illinois state championship last weekend.  Also on the show is former Jacksonville Jaguar QB Phil Stambaugh, who talks about guiding his school, Pius X, to the Pennsylvania Class A quarterfinals.

Missouri High School Football Scores - Week 7

by Jeff Fisher
Missouri High School Football Huddle

Jefferson City (7-0) blew a big lead, but was able to bounce back in overtime to beat Rockhurst 33-30 in double overtime in a battle of Class 6A powers Friday night.

Jefferson City ran out to a 23-7 lead at half in the battle of unbeaten, but the Hawklets tied the game in regulation at 23-23.  After both teams scored in the first touchdowns in the first overtime, Jefferson City kicker Ryan Tanner kicked a field goal in the second OT to snap the school's 13-game win streak against Rockhurst (6-1).

Missouri Announces New Postseason Format

by Jeff Fisher
Missouri High School Football Huddle

The Missouri State High School Activities Association has changed the football playoff system for the 2012 season.

Under the new format, teams will play a nine-game regular season with every team qualifying for the postseason.  Teams will be placed in eight-team districts that will be seeded under a points system.

Week 10 will start the postseason with three weeks of playoff games to determine eight district champs that will advance to the state quarterfinals.

Classification sizes remain the same with the largest 32 teams in Class 6.  Classes 1-4 will include the smallest 64 schools in ascending order.  Class 5 will include the remaining schools.

Last year, John Burroughs finished runner-up in Missouri's Class 3.

Also on show will be 2010 High School Rudy Award winner Chance Anthony of Breckinridge County High School in Kentucky. Anthony was a two-way starter on this year's football team in spite of the fact that he was born without the lower part of his right arm.

MSHSAA Looking at New High School Football Playoff Format

by Jeff Fisher
Missouri High School Football Huddle

Jeff McNiell of the Houston Herald is reporting today that the Missouri State High School Activities Association is going to examine whether to abandon the current playoff system for a new format.

The 2011 season will mark the fourth year in a four-year trial period for a playoff system that advances the two top teams from each district to the post-season.

According to McNiell's story, the MSHSAA is requesting input from its member schools about the current system and two other options.  Aside from the current system, another option is to return to the playoff system used from 1988 to 2007, which qualified one team from each four-team district.  The other is to play a nine-game regular season with the 10th week starting a tournament that would involve every team in the state.
